Beltane

Beltane is a traditional Gaelic festival marking the beginning of summer, historically celebrated on May 1st. It was one of the four major seasonal festivals in the Gaelic calendar, alongside Samhain, Imbolc, and Lughnasadh, and was primarily observed in Ireland, Scotland, and the Isle of Man.

The word Beltane derives from the Old Irish Beltene or Beltaine, often interpreted to mean "bright fire" or "Bel’s fire," possibly referencing a deity such as the Continental Celtic god Belenus (MacKillop). The festival was centered on the use of fire as a purifying and protective force, celebrating fertility, growth, and the renewal of life associated with summer.

The core ritual of Beltane was the lighting of bonfires, particularly on hilltops. People and livestock were driven between or over these fires to invoke protection and fertility for the coming season. This practice is documented in several early Irish texts and folklore accounts (Danaher).

May flowers (such as hawthorn, primrose, and rowan) were used to decorate homes, doors, and barns, believed to ward off fairies and evil spirits (Evans). In Ireland, the May Bush, a decorated branch or small tree adorned with ribbons, shells, and flowers, was often erected in communal spaces or outside individual homes (Ó hÓgáin).

Beltane also marked the seasonal movement of cattle to summer pastures, and thus held deep importance in pastoral societies where livestock was central to economic and ritual life (Rees & Rees).

While the celebration of Beltane declined in the 19th and 20th centuries due to Christianization and cultural shifts, many of its customs were preserved in rural communities. The Beltane Fire Festival, launched in 1988 in Edinburgh, Scotland, is a modern revival drawing on historical sources and performance art to celebrate the festival’s ancient themes of fertility, transformation, and community (Beltane Fire Society).

Beltane stands as a powerful expression of ancient Celtic cosmology, honoring fire, fertility, and the rhythms of the natural world. Though its historical practice has evolved, its core themes endure in both folklore and contemporary celebrations.
